As the member pointed out, we sponsor the positive image
awards in the state each year. It is a great program that recognises youth in
our community who do a fantastic job in displaying a positive image. This year
we received 78 nominations for this award. Last Tuesday we had a great
opportunity to make a surprise visit to Rossmoyne Senior High School to give
out the award to young Katrina Pereira. She is a fantastic individual who has
done much for her community. I am sure the member for Riverton is very proud to
have her in his area. Katrina did a fantastic job. She not only is part of a
sustainability program at Rossmoyne high school but also got some grants from
the local council to put towards the sustainability program. She also invited
eight local schools to her school to give them a tour of the program. The most
interesting part is that two teachers nominated her for this award, without
each knowing that the other was making that nomination, which shows how well
she does in her own classroom and with the teachers. She is a girl who strives
to do everything well and is a team leader, and she showed great initiative in
her work on sustainability. It is great that she won the positive image award.
This award provides a fantastic opportunity for me, as Minister for Youth, to
highlight what youth are doing in our community and that there are some great
future leaders.
