OSBORNE PARK HOSPITAL
643. Mr D.R. MICHAEL to the Minister for Health:
I refer to the McGowan Labor
government's significant investment in our hospitals, in particular the
much-needed $24.9 million upgrade to the Osborne Park Hospital. Can the
minister outline to the house how these upgrades will ensure that expecting
mothers across my electorate and the northern suburbs are able to not only give
birth close to where they live but also get the care they need?

I would like to thank the member
for Balcatta for the question. Maybe with the work that we have done on his
hospital, he will get off my back, such is his tireless advocacy for this
hospital!
I was delighted to join the member
for Kingsley and the member for Balcatta during the break to announce the government's
plans for the significant enhancement of the Osborne Park Hospital. The
enhanced obstetric services, including a neonatal nursery and fit-for-purpose
maternity assessment unit, will enable local mothers with low to moderate–risk
pregnancies to give birth closer to home. This is about putting patients first.
In addition to that, we are implementing a new neonatal nursery, which will
provide a high level of care in the nursery to reduce the need for babies
requiring specialist care to be transferred to King Edward Memorial Hospital
for Women or the new Perth Children's Hospital, enabling more mothers
and their babies to remain at the same hospital following their labour
experience.
One of the key election commitments
we made was to re-establish some rehabilitation services in the northern
suburbs. I am very pleased to announce that the new 16-bed rehabilitation unit
will comprise the six existing stroke beds as well as 10 new beds, and will
specialise in caring for patients aged over 65 years who require
rehabilitation. The Premier and I met with
some of those patients at the hospital. They believe that they receive
outstanding care at Osborne Park Hospital, but all of them were excited
to see how we can expand rehabilitation services at Osborne Park Hospital. For
the first time ever, patients will have access to a range of allied health and
medical staff, who will provide inpatient, outpatient and day therapy services.
The state-of-the-art rehabilitation unit's therapy space will be 90 per
cent larger and enhance recovery outcomes by enabling patients to more easily
interact with one another. This is a significant investment. It is a $14.3 million
investment by the state government, with the state securing the remaining funds
from our good friends the commonwealth government. It is another outstanding
outcome for the people of the northern suburbs and a great outcome for putting
patients first. I would like to congratulate the member for Balcatta for his
tireless advocacy to improve health care for people in his area.
