CURTIN VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND EDUCATION CENTRE — STAFF
(1) Is the minister aware that all Curtin vocational training and education centre staff contracts expire before the end of 2010? (2) Can the minister guarantee that Curtin VTEC staff will not lose their jobs? (3) Can Curtin VTEC staff expect to be transferred to the TAFE once the long-awaited move of turning Curtin VTEC into a TAFE has been finalised, and, if not, why not? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) I am aware that contracts for fixed-terms expire on 31 December 2010. (2) Decisions regarding the staffing arrangements cannot be made until a final decision on the transfer of Curtin VTEC to the Department of Training and Workforce Development has been made. It is expected that normal operations of the college will continue into 2011 if the transfer proceeds. It is not anticipated that there will be any greater variation in lecturing staff numbers than is usual from year to year. (3) The legislative framework and different industrial awards and agreements do not allow for staff to be transferred as such. However, should the changes proceed, arrangements for continuity of service and staffing will be negotiated.
