(b) if he is aware that this additional cost impost on regional and remote families, particularly during times of drought, is seriously affecting the ability of some children in these areas to continue schooling through to Year 12; (c) if the State Government will increase its boarding allowance to help meet this shortfall in 2003; and (d) if not, why not?
(c) if the State Government will increase its boarding allowance to help meet this shortfall in 2003; and (d) if not, why not?
(d) if not, why not?
The gap equates approximately to the cost of providing for a child living at home. For parents who receive the minimum allowance, the gap is $48.53 for each of the forty weeks that a student is boarding away from home. This net cost is no higher than it was in 1994. For parents who meet the income test requirements, the gap is reduced to $23.13 for each of the 40 weeks that a student is away from home. b) I appreciate that some families affected by successive drought will be finding it difficult to meet these costs. However, under the income test rule, many of those families will most likely be eligible to receive maximum assistance. c) Yes. The State Boarding Away from Home Allowance is now indexed to changes in the Consumer Price Index and will be increasing from $661.50 in 2002 to $695 in 2003. d) Not applicable
