Mr. Logan questions the Minister about the impact of TAFE fee increases on student enrolments and potential industry shortages, referencing criticisms from the State School Teachers Union of WA. The Minister disagrees with the union's assessment, citing stable apprenticeship and diploma enrolments, but acknowledges a decline in general industry training enrolments.

STATE TRAINING PROVIDERS — FEES —
STUDENT ENROLMENTS
658. Mr F.M. LOGAN to the
Minister for Training and Workforce Development:
I have a supplementary question. Is the State School TeachersXXX ###XXX Union of WA president correct in his
criticisms that more and more students will be driven away from TAFE as a
result of these fee increases and industry will be left with shortages it
cannot fill?

AnswerView source ↗

I do not think so, because the level of enrolments in
apprenticeships and diplomas is staying up there. Slightly fewer people are
doing diplomas, but they are doing longer hours. People are accessing the loan
system to pay the fees. The concern is, as I said, that drop of 20 per cent in
enrolments in the general industry training area, and we will do our best to
address that.
