KIMBERLEY — IVANHOE CROSSING
1202. Hon DARREN WEST to the minister
representing the Minister for Local Government:
I refer to the Shire of Wyndham–East
Kimberley and the safety concerns regarding Ivanhoe Crossing.
(1) Will the
minister ensure that the commissioner appointed in place of the Shire of
Wyndham–East Kimberley will thoroughly investigate and make public the
history of Ivanhoe Crossing and council decisions in respect of safety and in
particular the decision to remove oversized rocks and steel plates in front of
the open culverts?
(2) Did the Shire
of Wyndham–East Kimberley and Main Roads work together on roadworks and
decide together to remove the rocks and steel plates in front of the open
culverts at Ivanhoe Crossing?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1) The minister
has power to direct the commissioner in this matter. However, I understand that
this issue was the subject of a community forum in May 2016 and an extensive
report to the council in June 2016 prior to the work being undertaken. The
agenda and minutes of that meeting can be accessed from the shire's
website.
(2) Works at the
crossing are done in consultation with Main Roads WA; however, the decision to
remove the rocks and steel plates was made by the council.
