WICKHAM DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL SITE
1311. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I refer to the dilapidated and
extremely dangerous site of the old Wickham District High School, which is
becoming a hotspot for antisocial behaviour amongst local youths.
(1) Is the minister aware of the
current state of the buildings?
(2) Is the minister aware of any
asbestos present in the buildings?
(3) Does the
government plan to demolish the buildings in order to remove the danger to the
local community; and, if yes, could she please detail that?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The
Department of Education has visited the site twice this financial year
including earlier this month. The department is working with the City of
Karratha to find a practical solution. As with most buildings of a certain age,
asbestos will be present. The buildings are being secured and made safe. The
former site is surplus to the Department of Education's requirements
and it has been referred to the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage to
determine the best use for the site. Demolition will be considered as part of
this process.
