PINEVIEW KINDERGARTEN - SPEECH THERAPY
I refer to the number of kindergarten children requiring speech therapy who are waiting to enter speech therapy programs. (1) Is the minister aware that Pineview Kindergarten in Coolbellup has 50 children with potential speech problems and only one speech therapist, who is available two days a week? (2) Is she aware that 22 of these children have severe speech delay and were nominated to attend the Caralee language development centre in 2006, but that only six were accepted into the program? (3) Can the minister outline the Department of Education and Training’s long-term strategy to deal with this crisis, including through the provision of on-site speech therapy services and funding for off-site private speech therapists? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The Department of Education and Training has advised that 54 students are enrolled at Pineview Kindergarten. Records indicate that 12 of these students were referred to a language development centre. (2) The Department of Education and Training has advised that 12 students from Pineview Kindergarten were referred to a placement at the Caralee language development centre and that five of these students were placed. The students from Pineview Kindergarten not placed at the Caralee LDC have access to support offered to school communities through the LDC flexible service delivery model and other services provided by the government. (3) Provision of adequate statewide support for speech and language is an ongoing priority for the department. Accordingly, the department recognises the need to provide more than just on-site speech therapy services, and has a number of strategies in place to build the capacity of school communities to address the speech and language needs of students. Hon Barbara Scott interjected. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : It is very rude to speak when somebody else is speaking. If the member does not mind, please hush. She is being very recalcitrant. In conclusion, the Department of Education and Training does not provide funding for off-site private therapists.
