The Department of Corrective Services advises:
(1)Prisoners and staff in Western Australian (WA) prisons are currently permitted to smoke in designated areas. Local Orders at each prison govern the management of smoking within the prison. This includes the disciplinary action for prisoners in contravention of the Orders.
(2)The Department is reviewing its current arrangement to ensure it complies with obligations relating to the health and safety of our staff and prisoners in custody. A decision to introduce a total ban on smoking has not been made.
