SHIRE OF MEEKATHARRA —
AFTER-SCHOOL CARE — CLOSURE
770. Ms M. BEARD to the Minister for Youth:
With many regional towns struggling
to provide essential youth services, I need to bring to the minister's
attention an announcement from the Shire of
Meekatharra today. It is advising that the kids-only youth centre, which
provides after-school care services and meals from 4.00 pm to 8.30 pm,
Monday to Friday, has needed to close today until further notice due to critical resourcing shortages. Given the
challenges the town is experiencing and the heightened need for youth services, will the minister
undertake to make direct contact with the CEO of the Shire of Meekatharra and collaborate with the relevant groups to source the assistance needed to
enable the shire to resume essential youth services as a matter of urgency?

I thank the member for the question
and for bringing it to my attention. I have not had a briefing on that issue
today, and I am really disappointed to hear that it has had to close its doors
today, hopefully, for a very temporary period. We know that when local
governments engage youth in their areas, whether it is metropolitan or regional
areas, it results in incredibly good outcomes for young people, who have their
involvement and their voices heard around the table. I am more than happy to
reach out to the CEO of Meekatharra and see what supports may be available to
help assist them in providing all the necessary services to the young people of
that region.
