❓ Mr. Birney asks which minister is responsible for the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act 1996. Premier Gallop avoids a direct answer, instead criticising the Leader of the Opposition's press release and highlighting government actions on child pornography.

I think we have given the Premier some notice of this question. Can the Premier please advise which minister is currently responsible for the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act 1996, as listed under schedule 2 of the Community Protection (Offender Reporting) Act 2004? Dr G.I. GALLOP

I think the Leader of the Opposition is really asking a question about a press release he put out earlier today in relation to some private member’s legislation he brought to Parliament dealing with the very important and serious issue of child pornography in our community. As a government, we are very committed to protecting the rights of our children, and we have taken a range of steps to ensure that protection. The Leader of the Opposition’s press release of this morning on this matter did not point out that legislation that passed through Parliament to establish the national register provided that a prosecutor in a certain case and the Commissioner of Police have the ability to ensure that people are placed on the register if they are not covered by the list of laws included in the original legislation. That provision was included to ensure that the breadth of coverage of our legislation would cover all circumstances. That being the case, the Leader of the Opposition indicated that one piece of legislation was not listed. The Minister for Justice will introduce into Parliament the censorship amendment bill, which will address the issue raised in the Leader of the Opposition’s media statement. An issue was raised by the Leader of the Opposition that will be addressed. Also, this is another example of how the opposition does not tell the whole story when it goes public with its point of view on an issue.
