(a) ‘Limited Authority to Teach’ is not a term contemplated in the scheme of teacher registration that operates in Western Australia. The correct term is ‘Limited Registration’.
To be eligible for Limited Registration, a nominated teacher must:
· have an offer of a teaching position;
· have the required skills, expertise and/or qualification(s) for the duties of the teaching position;
· meet the English language requirements for Limited Registration; and
· be a fit and proper person to be registered as a teacher.
The circumstances where an application for Limited Registration may be made include:
· Filling teaching positions where specialist skills are difficult to source, or where a qualified teacher is not available. These include, for example, Aboriginal languages and other languages, music and arts/dance teaching positions.
· Pre-service teachers in the final year of a teaching qualification at an Australian university for part-time, fixed-term, casual relief vacancies.
As at 13 September 2023, the number of teachers holding Limited Registration working in Department of Education schools was:
(i) Metropolitan- 380
(ii) Midwest- 28
(iii) Goldfields- 38
(iv) Kimberley- 18
(v) Pilbara- 34
(vi) Wheatbelt- 37
(vii) Southwest- 42
(viii) Great Southern – Not applicable. The Department of Education has no region of that name.
