FOREST PRODUCTS COMMISSION — FIREWOOD SUPPLY
888. Hon LOUISE KINGSTON to the Minister for Forestry:
The minister has stated that there would
be an ongoing supply of firewood from ecological thinning and mining.
(1) Has the
Forest Products Commission made firewood available to its former customers
under the same conditions as previous contracts?
(2) Has the FPC required that
customers take firewood from the karri forest?
(3) How much karri firewood was sold under the
previous forest management plan—I think it should read ''forest management
plan'' not ''financial management plan''—and what
percentage of firewood sales were karri?
(4) Why is the FPC requiring that
firewood merchants accept karri firewood?
(5) Has the FPC taken independent legal advice as to
whether its firewood sales tactics breach the Trade Practices Act?
(6) Has the FPC taken into account
the termite risk to firewood users accepting karri into their homes?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The honourable member changed the wording of the
question as she read it out. The answer I have is as per the question
submitted, in which the member used the words ''financial management
plan''.
(1) No. Contractual conditions
reflect the new forest management plan.
(2) No.
(3) It is not clear what financial
management plan is being referred to.
(4) All firewood
contracts that have been offered specify the type and grade of timber to be
supplied. There is no requirement to accept any contract.
(5) No.
(6) Any untreated wood could
present a termite risk.
I mentioned question (3). We read
it as referring to a financial management plan, which did not make sense to any
of us.
