In the lead-up to the recent 2001 state election, Labor promised to spend an extra $4.5 million for allied health services in regional areas. In the light of this promise and with the present health service crisis in the goldfields area, particularly now with the absence of obstetric services, I ask - (1) When can the people of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region expect to once again have a permanent obstetrician resident at the Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital? (2) Will the minister give the people of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region a commitment to prevent any further decline in their hospital services? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Kalgoorlie-Boulder Health Service has a very high standard obstetric service. Women giving birth in Kalgoorlie have access to a number of services, including eight general practitioner obstetricians, a hospital obstetric service with experienced midwives, and a general surgeon on call for emergency deliveries by caesarean section. The Department of Health is working hard to restore specialist obstetric services to the area as soon as possible. (2) This Government is committed to delivering quality health care to all Western Australians and will work together with local communities to do so.
