SCHOOLS —
PLASTER GLASS CEILINGS
641. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
Minister for Education:
I refer to the work being done between the Department of
Education and the Department of Finance's Building Management and Works
to target high-priority schools that have the highest risk plaster glass
ceilings.
(1) What is the status of that work?
(2) Has a
strategy been developed yet; and, if not, what is the expected time to complete
the development of the strategy?
(3) What options have been identified to improve the biennial
building inspection program?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) Initial
ceiling inspections identified that 16 schools had ceilings that were assessed
as requiring urgent replacement or remediation works. Works have been completed
at five schools, commenced at three schools and are planned at eight schools.
All works will be completed by the end of June 2015.
(2) A broader
strategy to manage all schools with plaster glass ceilings will be completed by
the end of May 2015.
(3) Options
currently include the separate inspection of ceilings by experienced or
qualified inspectors and/or clearly stating the skills required of the current
inspectors who carry out building condition assessments to ensure that
appropriate ceiling inspections are undertaken.
