According to the commonwealth aged care benchmark, the March 2001 Broome aged care plan established that a 22-bed high care facility was desperately needed in Broome.  To date there are six places available in the Broome District Hospital.  Excess patients are transferred to Derby - 220 kilometres away - which causes enormous distress to patients.  In 1999, the state Minister for Health agreed in principle to allocate the beds from the Mt Henry hospital closure to the Kimberley.  Only 12 beds have been allocated to Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek. (1) Can the minister advise whether any funds from the sale of the Mt Henry hospital land have been allocated to fund a high care facility in Broome? (2) Can the minister advise whether a decision has been made on how many beds will be allocated to Broome as a result of the Mt Henry hospital closure? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question.  I presume that the Broome aged care plan referred to is that which was commissioned by the Shire of Broome and to which the Health Department of Western Australia contributed $20 000.  The Health Department is taking a planned approach to the provision of aged care services throughout the Kimberley that will incorporate Broome.  The Broome aged care plan forms part of this planned approach for the region as a whole.  Notwithstanding that residential aged care services are a responsibility of the Commonwealth, the minister has requested that the Health Department provide him with a briefing on the need for aged care services in Broome. (1) No funds from the sale of Mt Henry hospital land have been allocated to fund a high care facility in Broome. (2) No beds have been allocated to Broome due to the Mt Henry hospital closure.  The Mt Henry hospital bed approvals have been allocated across the State, and in principle it has been agreed to allocate 12 of those beds to Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek.
