I thank the member for some notice of this question. Members will be aware of the work the Government is doing in the conservation estate with the rolling out of its old-growth forest policy and the creation of 30 new national parks. While that work has been done, we have not ignored other parks in the conservation estate. I am pleased to announce the creation of a 726-hectare conservation reserve within the Lake Bryde catchment. This was recommended as part of the State’s salinity strategy, and the Department of Conservation and Land Management has been able to acquire this land from private interests and turn it into a conservation reserve. This area includes approximately 350 hectares of significant wetlands and water courses in a significant catchment. In fact, for some time the catchment has been designated as a natural diversity recovery catchment. As part of this acquisition, CALM will further investigate innovative methods of treating salinity, and work will be undertaken in the area of tree planting and in the management of surface and ground water. The Lake Bryde area is a sanctuary for about 60 species of birds and other important species as part of the region’s biodiversity. I am delighted that this acquisition has been made. This is a valuable contribution to salinity management and our conservation estate.
