I have a supplementary question. Why has the minister not sought a proper briefing on this and why is she not prepared to divulge to this Parliament the reasons for the deputy commissioner’s resignation? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I have had sufficient briefing from the Commissioner of Police to make me confident that he has taken the appropriate course of action; that is, to seek the oversight of the CCC in this matter. I would like to inform the house of what the Commissioner of Police put on his e-mail system to every police officer in this state earlier in the week. He said as follows - As the accountable officer for the WA Police, I have a duty to ensure that issues of conduct are addressed correctly and in accordance with procedures. I want to make it clear that this applies to all officers employed in the WA Police regardless of rank. While this is an internal matter, I also had a duty to advise the Corruption and Crime Commission. I am required to report these matters by law because it is an important element of maintaining community confidence in my judgement and response to internal inquiries. As this matter did not involve corrupt or criminal behaviour or serious misconduct, the Corruption and Crime Commission confirmed that it was appropriate for me as Commissioner to deal with the matter.
