The Premier and I had great pleasure
in officially opening the extension of the Joondalup train line to Butler.
Mr D.J. Kelly interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Bassendean, that is enough. I call you to order for the first time.
Mr D.C. NALDER : As
I said, the Premier and I had great pleasure in opening the extension of the
train line from Clarkson through to Butler on Sunday. This project is three
months ahead of schedule and $20 million under budget. I congratulate all those
involved, particularly within the departments, for doing such a fantastic job
in delivering this outstanding project. It is expected that around 2 000
passengers will utilise this station every morning and take the 37-minute train
ride to Perth. These passengers can choose from six feeder bus services. Eleven
new buses have been added as part of this project, because it is a fully
integrated public transport solution, and that is what is really important
about this project. People can ride bicycles safely to the station on
uninterrupted principle shared paths, with additional services provided at the
station to park bicycles. In addition, there are toilet facilities and
baby-change facilities. We have considered everything to ensure that this is a fantastic
experience. Despite some negative criticism from the other side, there is
access to 930 car parking bays, which have been well utilised, but are not full
at this point, as was suggested by the opposition. It is appropriate that I
take this opportunity to acknowledge former transport ministers Hon Simon O'Brien and Troy Buswell
for the important roles that they played in delivering this project.
This $220 million
project is just a only one part of the infrastructure the government is adding
to the northern suburbs, which includes 5 000 additional parking bays across
the train network, of which 1 800 will be on the Joondalup line. Also, $244 million
has been spent on 22 railcar sets to increase the public transport capacity
across the Perth metropolitan area. More than $500 million has been allocated
to a bus replacement program and a $28 million project is planned to widen
Mitchell Freeway from Hepburn Avenue to Hodges Drive. We have committed $48 million
to construct a second carriageway on Reid Highway between Erindale Road and
Duffy Street. A further $75 million has been committed to the interchange on
Reid Highway and Malaga Drive. This government is committed to the
northern suburbs and the northern area and will continue to deliver as
promised.
