Population growth
88. Hon Rod Caddies to
the Leader of the House representing the Premier:
I
refer to the Premier's own remarks that Western Australia's rapid population
growth is generating major challenges for our state.
(1) Can the Premier explain the
government's decision not to support One Nation's motion in the Legislative
Council on 10 December 2025 calling for official acknowledgement of the impacts
of rapid population growth in Western Australia?
(2) Can the Premier confirm that his
commute from Kwinana each morning is taking considerably longer as a result of
growing congestion?
(3) Aside from increased freeway
congestion, housing shortages, greater expenditure on public servants and
higher smoking rates, what other significant effects has rapid population
growth had on Western Australia?
The President: Honourable member, there are several
parts to that question I want to reflect on in relation to the type and nature
of the question asked. However, in the interests of keeping question time
moving, I will allow it through at this stage and see whether the government
has an answer. If there are any issues in relation to further reflection on the
standing orders, I will come back to you on that. I am going to let it through
at this stage and see whether the government has an answer.

Thank you,
President. The following response has been provided by the Premier and I answer
on behalf of the Leader of the House.
(1)–(3) The premise of the question is incorrect.
The member's motion on 10 December 2025 did not include the phrase "population
growth". Population growth in WA has resulted in significant investments
in health, housing and education to support Western Australians. With the
strongest overall population growth in the country over the last five years, we
are continuing to responsibly manage the state's finances so that we can invest
in the infrastructure, industries and jobs of the future.
