ALCOA WORLD ALUMINA, WAGERUP, EMISSIONS
I refer to the health problems caused by the ongoing emissions from Alcoa World Alumina’s Wagerup plant. (1) Is the minister aware that the Wagerup medical practitioners forum set up by the Department of Health made several recommendations to address this situation including an improved focus on the clinical management of people affected? (2) Considering the report was made available in early December 2001, does the minister take the recommendations of the medical practitioners forum seriously, and, if so, what action plan has he put in place to address the health problems and the risk of health problems with residents in the affected areas? Mr KUCERA

(1)-(2) I thank the member for this question. Given that we assisted in setting up that forum, of course we take its report seriously. The Department of Health is working not only in its own right, but also with the Department of Environmental Protection and other agencies to make sure that a proper plan is formulated out of that report.
