Perth entertainment and sporting precinct
127. Mr Hugh Jones to the Minister for Sport and Recreation:
I refer to the WA
Labor government's election commitment to deliver the Perth entertainment and sporting
precinct.
(1) Can the minister outline to the house how this
project will support this government's efforts to bring more events to WA,
making WA the major event capital of the South-East Asian region?
(2) Can the minister advise the house if she is
aware of any calls for more motorsport events as a key tourism drawcard?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for that
question. In particular, I thank the member for his interest in this project,
as well as the interest he has had from his constituents about having a home
for speed skating in WA. There is enormous interest in, and there are enormous
possibilities for, how this sports and entertainment precinct can be home to
many sports that currently do not have a home in WA. That is why it will truly be
a multi-use precinct, where we will be looking at the amphitheatre, cycling and
disabled sports. There is enormous opportunity in relation to this precinct. We
also want to make it the home of a key motorsport event each year. We have gone
out for consultation and, so far, we have had hundreds of different ideas on what we should do there. As I said, in particular, a
lot of little known sports or emerging sports want to have a home.
This sports and entertainment
precinct will again build on our record of delivering key events to Western
Australia. We have seen that when the government acts, major events follow. It
was a Labor government that allowed UFC into WA. We have had three major UFC
events over the past eight years, bringing thousands of people to WA. Now, as a
result, we also have our own WA champion, Jack Della Maddalena. It was so great
to be at Yagan Square last night to welcome Jack and, of course, his title belt
to Western Australia. He is a very proud Western Australian who is out there
supporting and promoting our state.
As we know, a lot of different
people support motorsport and a lot of people know what motorsport can do for a
city and its activation. Of course, we have heard the Leader of the Opposition,
who is part of the "no-alition", say that he does not like motorsport
now and does not appreciate the impact of motorsport on the city. Members may
not be that surprised to know that the Leader of the Opposition has had a bit
both ways on this.
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: He says one thing here and another
thing there. Of course, it does not take too much research to find how excited
he was about motorsport in the city. Here he is in this photograph with a flag,
waving off the start of—
Mr Basil Zempilas: Is that Burswood Park? That's
the city!
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did you consult with the residents?
Mr Basil Zempilas: Is that Burswood Park?
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did you consult with the residents?
Mr Basil Zempilas: Is that Burswood Park?
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did you consult with the residents?
Mr Basil Zempilas: Is that Burswood Park?
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did you consult with the residents?
The Speaker: Members!
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did you consult with the residents?
Mr Basil Zempilas: We know you haven't!
The Speaker: Minister!
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did you consult? It is "Both Ways"
Basil!
The Speaker: Minister!
Mr Basil Zempilas: Ask the member behind you!
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, it is not your
question, and it is not your question to respond to either. The minister has
the floor. If you continue to interject, I will call you. Carry on, minister.
Ms Rita Saffioti: The Leader of the Opposition said
this:
This celebration of motorsport attracts
thousands of enthusiasts and visitors alike into the city every year …
He loved the
visitation as a result of motorsport. He also said:
The people of Perth can enjoy rally
sprints throughout the city and soak up the electric atmosphere.
Look at that; he
loved it!
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition! Carry on,
minister.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Here he is again in a photograph
with some drivers. He loves motorsport! He spoke at the event.
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Of course he was speaking at it! He loves
motorsport. Look at him there. Were you in the car, Leader of the Opposition? I
do not know. He loves motorsport.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members!
Thanks, minister; if you can bring your answer to a conclusion.
Ms Rita Saffioti: The Leader of the Opposition also
said:
This is yet another example of the City
sponsoring unique events that add activity and excitement to our City of Light,
attracting visitors from near and far …
Look at that. Again,
we have a Leader of the Opposition who stands for nothing and says whatever he
can to get through the next hour. We have seen it time and again. Today, we
know he loves motorsport and celebrates the impact it has on the local economy.
Did the member
consult with the residents?
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Did the member consult with the
residents?
The Speaker: Minister!
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members!
Ms Rita Saffioti: It is a pantomime. Did the member
consult with the residents? Look at that: the double standards of the Leader of
the Opposition. He says whatever, and we saw that last night when he was out
there saying, "I support the new firearms legislation", but was too
gutless to say a word in that debate. In three hours, he did not say a word,
and then he just follows—
Withdrawal of remark
The Speaker: Minister! Can
you please withdraw the use of the word "gutless".
Ms Rita Saffioti: I withdraw.
Questions without notice resumed
Ms Rita Saffioti: The Leader of the Opposition was too
afraid to speak in that debate. In three hours of debate, he was too afraid to
speak on that debate, and then he just follows the Leader of the National
Party. It is a disgraceful effort. He says anything and has a buck each way all
the time. Well, he is not a commentator anymore. He has to actually stand for
something in this place.
