I refer to heavy vehicle pilots in
Western Australia, and ask: (a) how many accredited heavy vehicle pilots licence
holders are there in WA; (b) how many accredited heavy vehicle pilots licence
holders were there in WA for each of the years 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017; (c) how many Main Roads traffic escort wardens are there
in WA; (d) what is the current authorised strength for Main Roads
traffic escort wardens; (e) how many Main Roads traffic escort wardens were there
for each of the years 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017; (f) when was the most recent occasion Main Roads
advertised for the position of traffic escort wardens; (g) what is the current average length of service for
traffic escort wardens; (h) are Main Roads transport inspectors also performing
the role of a traffic escort warden; (i) if yes to (h) why; and (j) if yes to (h) how many times has that occurred
in 2016, 2017 and as of 15 November 2018?

(a) 1,247
(b) Prior to 2017 heavy vehicle pilots were issued their accreditation through registered training providers. Main Roads does not have accurate data surrounding how many were issued during this period. Heavy vehicle pilots are now licensed through Main Roads.
(c) Currently 23 Traffic Escort Wardens.
(d) There are currently 24 authorised Traffic Escort Warden positions, however this number will change depending on demand.
(e) 2013 - 29, 2014 - 27, 2015 - 19, 2016 - 18, 2017 -19, 2018 - 23.
(f) Main Roads engages Traffic Escort Wardens via contract and therefore does not directly advertise the positions.
(g) For the current 23 Traffic Escort Wardens, the average length of service is approximately 3 years.
(h) Main Roads Transport Inspectors have been authorised to perform the function of Traffic Escort Wardens since July 2018. However, Transport Inspectors will only be used in exceptional circumstances, which to date has not been necessary.
(i)-(j) Not applicable
