HEALTH SYSTEM —
INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE WORKS
812. Mr D.R. MICHAEL to the Minister for Health:
I refer to the McGowan Labor government's
massive $81.5 million job-creating investment in infrastructure maintenance
works for Western Australia's hospitals, aged-care sites and regional
staff accommodation. Can the minister outline to the house how this significant
maintenance package will improve conditions for health staff and patients, both
in the electorate of Balcatta and across the state; and can the minister advise
the house how this massive maintenance package will provide a boost to the
local economy?

I am delighted to be able to outline
the dividend of good, sound financial management of the state's
finances. The community will benefit from more than $80 million in
infrastructure maintenance works in our hospital system, on top of the current
repairs and maintenance budget, which is a feature of every budget each year.
This is on top of that, and it is about creating jobs in our small and
medium-sized businesses. It is about investing in our hospitals. I was at Sir
Charles Gairdner Hospital a few weeks ago for a staff engagement forum. At that
forum, they said that they wanted to see more maintenance work done at the
hospital and upgrades done to what is now a fairly ageing piece of hospital
infrastructure. I am very proud to say that around $24 million of the $81.5
million will be invested at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. It will go into such
things as paint upgrades; floor treatments; upgrades to the ICU bays, including upgrades to 20 patient
bathrooms; and, for the member for Balcatta, $3 million will be invested across
King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, and Osborne Park Hospital for
maintenance works that we can now bring forward because of the hard work that
the McGowan government has done to fix the state's finances.
I am very proud to say that $37
million of the $81.5 million will be spent in the rural and regional
communities where WA Country Health Services operate. That is important because
we know that small businesses operating in those regional communities will be
the beneficiaries of these projects, which are hammer and screwdriver ready. We
want to make sure that we continue to drive —

The SPEAKER : Members, I will
get the minister to start again, if you keep interjecting.
Mr R.H. COOK : Members
opposite hate good news for small business in Western Australia. They hate good
news about jobs in Western Australia, and they hate good news about investing
in our hospitals. Once again, the McGowan Labor government is putting patients
first and, in this case, we are putting patients and jobs first for Western Australia,
and I am very proud of the announcement today.
