FOREST MANAGEMENT REGULATIONS, APIARY RECORDS
I refer to the honourable minister’s answer to question on notice 184 asked on 22 August 2001 regarding the level of compliance with regulations 73(2) and 73(3) of the Forest Management Regulations 1993. Given that my information is that there is widespread non-compliance in practice - (1) Do the field records of apiary inspectors and records of production validate these paper records? (2) Will the legitimacy of each apiarist to hold beekeepers sites be properly audited before any tradeable property right is conferred on permit holders? Hon TOM STEPHENS

(1) The Minister for the Environment is not aware of any non-compliance with the regulations. The Department of Conservation and Land Management’s records indicate that the level of new site applications has remained constant over the past three years. Records show that no beekeeper has attempted to secure large numbers of sites over the past three years. (2) The need for an audit will be given consideration at the same time that final consideration is given to trading of apiary sites and the proposal to repeal regulations 73(2) and 73(3).
