PERTH TRANSPORT PLAN FOR 3.5 MILLION PEOPLE AND
BEYOND
497. Mr I.M. BRITZA to the Minister for
Transport:
Can the minister update the house on
the recently launched Perth transport plan for 3.5 million people and beyond?

AnswerView source ↗

It is certainly a pleasure to have
the responsibility of releasing the Perth and Peel transport plan for 3.5 million
people and beyond. This is the first time in a very long time that we have seen
a multimodal integrated transport plan developed for the people of Western Australia.
It not only looks at priorities in the short term, but also looks beyond
election cycles into the future to understand what this city will require as we
continue to grow.
Several members interjected.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : I just heard the term ''Metronet''. Let us have
a little closer look at it. We talk about the city's growth and the
importance of integrated transport; I have heard the opposition say that. I have
not seen anything other than a few lines on a bit of paper mentioning railway
lines. It is important to show an integrated transport plan and understand how
we will connect the bus system to rail and how the road networks integrate and
work together. Since coming into government, we have retrofitted car parking
bays to fix up the mess left by previous Labor governments on their rail plans.
The shadow minister has contributed to this debate today. I have seen very
little in the media. I recognise Hon
Ken Travers, who seems to have some knowledge on this subject. What are
we seeing from the shadow Minister for Transport? ''Oh, it's
just a few squiggly lines on a bit of paper.'' If members opposite get
behind the transport plan and go online, they will see five technical reports
that sit behind this plan. It is a plan that was not developed on the back of
an envelope. This is a plan that has not been developed by the Liberal Party.
It was developed by professional transport planners over a two-year period.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean, I call you to order for the first time.
Member for Butler, I know that you are excited on the first day back, so I am
going to give you a chance.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : This transport plan was developed by professional transport
planners. I am proud to facilitate that process. It is really important that we
have put this out for consultation to work with local government and industry
and to allow the general community to make a contribution. As we move forward,
each individual project committed to by future governments will need to be
costed and go through a proper financial analysis. That will dictate the timing
at which it can occur. This is well thought through and well considered, and we
look forward to sharing it and taking feedback from the broader community and
adopting that in the overall plan.
