CORONAVIRUS — SPORTING EVENTS —TRANSITION
PLAN
728. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Minister for Sport and
Recreation:
I refer to news this morning that
the Tasmanian Premier is writing to Cricket Australia, pitching to host the
fifth Ashes test. Has the state government's
lack of a clear, safe transition plan with exact dates jeopardised the Ashes
test and opened the door for other jurisdictions to secure major events
due to the government not providing certainty to business and the community?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please,
members! The Premier is more than capable of answering this question. We do not
need a lot of interjections.
Mr R.H. Cook : The question
was to the minister for sport.
The SPEAKER : Sorry, the
minister for sport—who is equally capable!

If that was supposed to be a short,
high-pitched delivery, it was basically a no ball! We have half a cricket team
in the opposition. With regard to the Ashes —
Several members interjected.
Dr A.D. BUTI : Basically,
we have got the member for Vasse, who cannot deviate from one angle. The Deputy
Premier hits her out of the ground every opportunity he has! We have got
the Leader of the Liberal Party, who serves up dead balls! We have got the
Leader of the Opposition —
Point of Order
Mr V.A.
CATANIA : I have a point of order.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : If I did not think it would advantage the opposition, I would
be tempted to cancel question time. When I rise to my feet, everyone is to be
quiet. You do not speak while the Speaker is on her feet. Points of order, as I
have said in this place many a time, are heard in silence. If you want to make
an occasional interjection, that is fine, but points of order are held in
silence. I do not expect to get interjections on points of order.
Mr V.A. CATANIA : Standing
order 78 states —
An answer must be relevant to the
question.
Clearly,
the minister for sport is missing the point here, or missing the ball, when it
comes to answering this question.
Several members interjected.
Dr A.D. Buti : Madam Speaker —
The SPEAKER : Sorry, I will be
ruling on the point of order before I give you the call, minister.
Again,
members, it is my job to rule on the point of order, not yours. I do not
require your advice. My ruling on this is that there is no point of
order and the minister's answer is relevant to the question.
Questions without Notice Resumed
Dr A.D. BUTI : I thought the
question was about cricket; I am just serving up a critique on the opposition's
cricket ability. We have got the Leader of the Opposition, the captain of the
team, who wants to put the member down as thirteenth man but she cannot at the
moment! The Leader of the Opposition —
Ms M.J. Davies : A lot of
people want to know the answer.
Dr A.D. BUTI : A lot of people
want to put him thirteenth man.
The answer to the member for North West
Central's question is —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Minister, I will
ask you to wait until the interjections cease before continuing your answer.
Dr A.D. BUTI : Leader of the
Opposition, the power of your bowls is like playing backyard cricket!
Member for North West Central, the
state government is working very closely with Cricket Australia and the Western
Australian Cricket Association and we are very confident we will get a resolution
that all cricket fans will be happy with. We would never put the safety of Western
Australians at risk, as the member would.
