I refer to the statement to Assembly Estimates Committee B on 22 May 2018 by the Director General of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Mr Duncan Ord that the department would deliver 7,000 square metres of exhibition space to the new WA Museum, and ask: (a) what
will be the amount of exhibition space at the new Museum; (b) when
was the amount of exhibition space assigned to the new Museum finalised; (c) has
the exhibition space originally assigned to a lower basement been redistributed
within the new Museum: (i) if
not, why not; (d) why does the official new Museum website state that there will be under 6,000 square metres of gallery space; and (e) will there be 1,000 square metres less exhibition space at the new Museum than what was promised when the original design was released in July 2016?

(a) 7,000 square metres.
(b) The structural design of the New Museum building was finalised at the completion of the detailed design development process in 2017.
(c) Yes, The Temporary Exhibition Gallery originally planned for the basement, is now located on Level One. It is still a 1,000 square metres gallery.
(i) Not applicable
(d) The 6,000 square metres figure refers to the amount of dedicated space assigned to galleries including the temporary exhibition gallery. It does not, however, include the Hackett Hall multi-purpose space, or the orientation spaces, which together, represent another 1,000 square metres.
(e) The concept design process is to enable architects and designers to determine the most appropriate design of a building. The concept design is followed by a detailed design development process where the most appropriate structural design is agreed.
Many changes to the concept design occur during this phase, however, the amount of exhibition space being provided at the new museum is consistent with the business case approved by the former Government.
