I refer the minister to her statement in the House yesterday talking up a significant increase in funding to regional domestic violence projects. (1) Can the minister confirm that an application from Marnja Jarndu Women’s Refuge for additional annual funding of $38 000 has been rejected? (2) Can the minister confirm that she did not respond to the refuge’s submission for funding until more than three months after it was first made? (3) Will the minister make good her commitment to family violence issues by ensuring that the women’s refuge does not close? Ms McHALE

I thank the member of the question. (1)-(3) The member is correct. Yesterday I announced a significant increase in funding for domestic violence services, particularly for women in regional Western Australia. I am delighted that the Gallop Government has made available additional funding of $4 million for that. I confirm that I have received correspondence from the women’s refuge in Broome, and extensive discussions have taken place between the refuge, the Department for Community Development in both Broome and the metropolitan area, and my office over the past weeks and months. At this stage I am not convinced that the increase in funding is warranted. We are working closely with the women’s refuge to consider possible savings and alternatives in the funding arrangement to enable the refuge to continue operating. The refuge has indicated that one of the pressures it is facing is the increased cost through the goods and services tax. That is remarkable. Ms Hodson-Thomas: That refuge will close unless its gets that funding. Ms McHALE: We are holding extensive discussions. I am meeting with the women’s refuge on Sunday. Ms Hodson-Thomas: Will you ensure that the refuge does not close? Ms McHALE: I have encouraged the refuge to look closely at strategies that have been suggested by the department and the Women’s Refuge Service of Western Australia to maintain and increase services to women in Broome and other parts of regional Western Australia.
