(1) Work is anticipated to commence in 2001. (2) The project for extension of Roe Highway from Welshpool Road to Nicholson Road will be awarded as a single contract, to be completed by 2004. The Contractor will be encouraged to complete Stage 4 (Welshpool Road to Kenwick Link) as early as possible and this may be completed by the end of 2002. (3) At the time of commencement of construction of the section of Roe Highway to Welshpool Road in 1994, the completion of Stage 4 was scheduled for prior to 1997. However, at that time the project was funded from a Federal Government Program for National Arterial Roads and the 1997 timing was based on anticipated Federal funds. This funding was discontinued and the project was rescheduled using State funds. (4) The connection to Welshpool Road was completed in 1994. Since that time some $65M has been spent and is currently being spent on the Roe Highway project to complete the Kenwick Link and the Albany Highway modifications. Both these stages had to be completed before Stage 4, which is required to pass beneath Albany Highway and the railway, can connect at the Kenwick Link. (5) Allocations in the Main Roads Capital Works budget and forward estimates for Roe Highway between Welshpool Road and Nicholson Road are as follows: (a) $11.5 million (b) $36.52 million (c) $31.25 million (d) $5.79 million (6) Heavy vehicles will select Roe Highway as the most viable option given the improved level of service provided. (7) No traffic counts have been taken, however it is unlikely that there has been any increase in heavy vehicles using William Street due to the Graham Farmer Freeway. Some redistribution of local residential traffic may have occurred with traffic using Orrong Road instead of Albany Highway.
