The government invests significant
money in WAIS to deliver a high-performance program, including supporting high-performance Western Australian athletes. We
are very proud of the Western Australian athletes who have been through
the various WAIS high-performance programs. We know that government investment
in that is important. As the member is well aware, the current structure of the
organisation was first established a number of decades ago when the decision
was made by the then government and minister that the board would be an
incorporated body. Any recommendations that the new board makes with regard to
its future structure—whether it becomes a statutory body or comes under
the department's auspices, for example—will be considered at
the time. But the focus of WAIS is very much
on delivering the restorative process, strengthening the governance of that
organisation and supporting the athletes in our high-performance
programs so that they can have the best possible opportunity to represent Western
Australia and Australia as part of either the Commonwealth Games or be selected
for the Olympic Games. That is what we are focused on and I am very confident
that WAIS is in a very good space now.
