Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group forms part of the separate Metropolitan Volunteer Sea Rescue Group, which comprises the groups from Cockburn, Fremantle and Whitfords. The MVSRG is not recognised as part of the Volunteer Marine Rescue Association, comprising 33 approved volunteer marine rescue groups statewide that receive state government grants through the Fire and Emergency Services Authority to subsidise their operations. (1) On 13 November 2004, a service level agreement was established between MVSRG and FESA. In line with that SLA, since 2004-05, the government has provided the MVSRG with a grant of $200 000 per annum to fund its operational and capital requirements. FESA is not aware of how that funding is distributed within the MVSRG. In 2004-05, the government also made a one-off capital grant of $200 000 to Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group for the purchase of a new vessel. (2) The MVSRG operate from the metropolitan waters extending seaward from the coast for a distance of approximately 35 nautical miles between a line drawn westward of the SS Alkimos wreck in the north and the Kwinana grain terminal in the south, and including the Swan and Canning Rivers, and within those waters. (3)-(4) This information would need to be provided direct from the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group. FESA is unable to obtain the required information within the time frame specified.
