SCHOOLS — LANDSDALE
386. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for Education:
That was not an answer to the question at all.
I refer to the pressing need for a K–7 primary school
in the south Landsdale area, the exponential population growth, the strong
representations from the local community, the high numbers at existing schools
and the failure in this year's budget to commit to building a new
school prior to 2016.
(1) How is it
that the case for south Landsdale is considered less worthy than other schools
referred to in this year's budget?
(2) What
criteria would need to be met before the community could expect a favourable
response from the government?
(3) Can the
minister give assurances that in the meantime educational outcomes will not be
prejudiced by the existing schools nearing capacity?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1)–(2)
The Department of Education regularly analyses growth in student numbers in
public schools and demographic trends across the state. The analysis generates
the priorities for the provision of additional accommodation required at
existing schools and the location and timing of new schools to relieve existing
schools.
Landsdale Primary School serves
the locality of Landsdale and in semester 1, 2013, it had an enrolment of 836 students
and is expected to reach approximately 950 kindergarten to year 6 students in
2016. Madeley Primary School and Ashdale Primary School serve adjacent areas
and their capacity is considered in the analysis of the enrolments.
Sites for future primary schools
have been identified in south Landsdale at the corner of Trentham Road and Amistad
Road and in east Landsdale on lots 167 and 168 on Kingsway. Only a portion—that
is, 0.85 hectares—of the Trentham Road site has been acquired; the
remainder of the school site is yet to be acquired. An early childhood annexe
is being constructed on the south Landsdale site to ease the accommodation
pressures on Ashdale Primary School and Landsdale Primary School. The
construction of this annexe is expected to be completed shortly.
Funding has been provided in the
2013–14 state budget to construct four new primary schools to open in
2016. The location of these schools has not yet been finalised and an
announcement of these schools will be made later this year. The establishment
of a new school in the area of Landsdale will be considered as part of this
planning process.
(3) Yes.
