The Government regularly looks for opportunities to provide affordable housing options in all parts of the metropolitan area and in country towns from the top to the bottom of the State. The opportunity to provide affordable housing in any part of the metropolitan area is often enhanced by local councils going into partnership with the Department of Housing and Works. Joint venture opportunities typically spread through a broad range of metropolitan areas. Many of those areas not only of the western suburbs but also other parts of Western Australia are a considerable distance from major infrastructure, such as hospitals, universities, railway lines and transport corridors. I have written to a number of councils, including those in the western suburbs of Perth, indicating that I am looking for joint venture opportunities. In the western suburbs I hope to position facilities for the treatment of cancer patients. In hospitals I hope to establish accommodation for the elderly. People need affordable housing options near universities for students. The disabled need options near transport facilities, such as the Perth to Fremantle railway. The quality facilities near those major infrastructure projects are attractive options to a variety of people. I was impressed by the comments of Max Trenorden, the Leader of the National Party, who expressed his support for my efforts in this pursuit as reported in The West Australian . I hope other members will see the attractiveness of having a reasonable spread of accommodation, particularly when it can be done in joint venture arrangements, with local councils and other non-government agencies making accessible land available for widespread affordable housing in Western Australia, including the western suburbs.
