NEWMAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL — FIRE
575. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the
Minister for Education:
I refer to the fire at Newman Senior High School in October
2014.
(1) What was the final value of damage caused?
(2) How many rooms were destroyed and what were they?
(3) Has
funding been allocated to remediate the damage, when are the works expected to
commence and when will they be completed?
(4) Is the
minister aware that the school canteen is in urgent need of upgrade and that
the air conditioning in the trades training centre is insufficient for the
building?
(5) Will the
minister commit funding to upgrade the school canteen and the air conditioning
to the trades training centre and to complete these works at the same time that
fire-damaged works are undertaken?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1) RiskCover has estimated the final value of the damage to
the buildings at $7.5 million.
(2) There were
13 rooms and staff and student toilets destroyed. The rooms were five general
teaching classrooms, three science laboratories, one science staff office, one
maths staff office, one medical centre and two cleaners' stores.
(3) Funding
will be provided by RiskCover for the replacement. The project is in the design
and documentation phase. Construction is expected to commence in late 2015,
with completion by the end of 2016.
(4)–(5)
I understand that the school has requested some improvements and that the
department is currently looking at some options to see whether the improvements
can be included in the rebuild program.
