Demersal fishing ban—Compensation
166. Hon Neil Thomson to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the
minister's decision to ban commercial demersal fishing in the west coast
region.
(1) For commercial businesses leasing
their fishing licences, is the government providing any compensation or
assistance?
(2) If yes to (1), what specifically is
being provided?
(3) If no to (1), why not?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) Commercial fishers who lease a licence
are required to renew their licence on an annual basis and are encouraged to
consider market conditions, including sustainability concerns, when choosing to
enter such commercial arrangements. Payments between licence holders receiving
payouts and people leasing licences from them is a private arrangement to be
worked out by affected parties.
