Did the Premier give a commitment to any person or organisation prior to or after the 2001 state election that voluntary euthanasia would be debated during the current parliamentary term; and, if so, to whom or which organisation? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. Prior to the state election the Premier said on radio station 6PR that he had no problem with that issue being debated in Parliament. The only condition he would place on it was to make sure that the debate was part of broader community consultation on the issue. In correspondence since the election, the Premier has reinforced this view and made it clear that the Government will not be introducing legislation but will consider allocating debating time if a private member’s Bill is introduced on the issue. He has also pointed out that if the issue is debated, Labor members will have a conscience vote.
