The
Department of Housing
advises:
(1) There is one Public Tenancy Support position in Newman.  The service provider for this position is the Pilbara Community Legal Service (PCLS).  The position is National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH) funded through Department of Child Protection (DCP) until July 2013.  There is also a financial counsellor with PCLS in Newman, this position is funded through DCP and is funded to July 2012.
Following a recent review, the Department of Housing now provides a housing officer in Newman three out of every four weeks. The Department will also make available a Customer Service Officer on a fortnightly basis to assist public housing tenants. This officer will work from the PCLS.
(2) The Department of Housing funds a Supported Housing Assistance Program in South Hedland which is operated by the PCLS.
In collaboration with DCP the Department of Housing has also developed a new intensive tenancy support program.  The
House2Home
program will provide home living skills, as well as support to access other services for issues including alcohol and drug dependency, positive parenting and financial management.  The objective of the program is to help tenants to establish and sustain a stable home.
The
House2Home
program is a new initiative that is being trialled in Roebourne for twelve months and will be subject to review.
The Government is committed to assisting clients to sustain their tenancies however it is ultimately the responsibility of the tenant to ensure that they behave appropriately.  It should also be noted that public housing assistance is not provided unconditionally, and where tenancy obligations are repeatedly ignored tenants will be held accountable for their actions.
