METROPOLITAN HEALTH SERVICE BOARD, REVIEW
I refer the Premier to reports that the Government has recently awarded a $338 000 contract to a team of consultants to undertake a review of the Metropolitan Health Service Board. (1) Why is the Premier wasting taxpayers’ funds by conducting a review of a body that has already been abolished? (2) Is the Premier aware that this review seeks the views of senior health service personnel on how metropolitan health services should be structured with a view to its governance and operations post-Metropolitan Health Service Board? (3) Does the Government have any plan or idea for the management of metropolitan health services in this State? Dr GALLOP

(1)-(3) I think that question is best described as one in which the Leader of the Opposition is entering waters into which he dare not tread. His Government took the reflex action of using consultants every time it had a problem. Under this Government - Several members interjected. Dr GALLOP: The galahs on the electric wires are active today. It is wonderful that their week off seems to have helped them become activated. The electricity must have raced through their system. As a result of my Government’s decisions, over the next four years we will save $40 million of taxpayers’ money because we have cut back on the use of consultants. That money will go into direct service delivery in Western Australia. We have reduced cabinet membership, cut down on advertising and on the use of consultants, and we will provide an extra $40 million for that latter program. The question about how the Commissioner for Health spends his budget would have been more appropriately addressed to the Minister for Health, who would have provided a comprehensive answer. I am very pleased to report to this House that due to this Government’s decision, $40 million that would have gone to the Leader of the Opposition’s mates in the consulting industry will be spent on better service delivery for the people of Western Australia. Mr Barnett: Is that your answer? Dr GALLOP: It is.
