SWAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL — STAFFING
868. Mr R.H. COOK to the Minister for
Health:
I refer to evidence provided to the
Standing Committee on Estimates and Financial Operations last week that up to
30 per cent of staff at Swan District Hospital may be made redundant, and the
minister's previous comment that anyone at Swan District Hospital who
wants a job in the new hospital can get one and that those who do not can be
given jobs elsewhere in the public sector. Does the minister stand by his
commitment that no staff will be made redundant as a result of the
privatisation of Midland Health Campus?

AnswerView source ↗

Yes, and we are not privatising
Midland Health Campus; we are contracting it out to the private sector. There
is a difference. I refer to comments of the former Leader of the Labor Party
Hon Eric Ripper who said exactly the same thing when comparing and contrasting
contracting out with privatisation, so perhaps the member for Kwinana would
like to go back and read the comments of his former leader.
I stand by those comments. We are encouraging staff at Swan
District Hospital to get jobs at the new hospital. There will be two options
for permanent staff within the health sector. The government has announced that
there will be a redundancy package, the details of which have not been worked
out, so that is an option for people working there if that is what they choose.
But if they wish to stay working within the public health system, we will find
a job for them elsewhere within the system.
