I have received the following answer - The State Government election commitment was to provide an additional 800 apprenticeships and 800 traineeships over its four-year term of government. As at 31 March 2002, 3 099 apprenticeships commenced compared with 3 276 at the same time last year, which represents 177 fewer commencements. There were 5 811 traineeship commencements compared with 5 732 at the same time last year representing 79 more commencements. Although the State Government has committed to fund and provide additional training to accommodate increased numbers of apprenticeships and traineeships in line with its election commitment, apprenticeship and traineeship commencements are largely dependent upon employer willingness to employ them. A number of strategies have been put in place to promote apprenticeships and traineeships to employers and young people, including a youth training strategy to enable young people who are existing workers with no qualifications to gain skills and recognised qualifications and a marketing strategy aimed at employers of apprentices which identifies industry skills shortages through industry champion John Hughes. Industry specific approaches have been undertaken to promote apprenticeships and traineeship training in industries where employment-based training has not occurred previously. An additional 174 qualifications have been established to broaden apprenticeship and traineeship training in Western Australia.
