As a result of the ‘PEEL AWAY the MASK’ study, it has been revealed that the Peel Area is one of the worst performing areas in Australia. The composite picture generated through the study is of a regional community facing levels of stress and negative indicators are higher than most other communities in Australia. The findings show that unless urgent support is channelled into the Peel region the current gap between Peel and other regions of Australia will become wider and more critical. What strategies has the Minister put in place to reverse this trend?

The social issues identified in the ‘Peel Away the Mask’ report have been escalating over a number of years and unfortunately will not be solved quickly. A strategic approach is now being adopted and facilitated by the Peel Development Commission that will address the urgent infrastructure, environmental, social and economic needs of the region. The Commission has been working to establish government - business - community partnerships to address the priority issues as identified in the report.
Recent Government announcements relating to Mandurah and the Peel region include the significant investment in public transport infrastructure and servicing, the redevelopment of the central business district within Mandurah, the continuation of the second phase of the Mandurah Ocean Marina and the Peel Heritage and Tourism Precinct. These initiatives will not only generate employment in their own right but will create development nodes for indirect business growth and improvement in local services.
The more critical social needs within the region are being given a high degree of focus by the Peel Development Commission and other agencies in the region. The ‘Peel Away the Mask’ report has assisted in raising awareness of the range of issues facing the region and of the negative impact that rapid population growth can have when it is not managed effectively.
The $400,000 Regional Development Scheme managed by the Commission has provided an opportunity for local groups to apply for funds to address issues confronting them. The Commission has appointed a funds facilitator to assist local groups with their applications not only to the Regional Development Scheme but also to other funding providers.
In addressing the social issues described in the ‘Peel Away the Mask’ report I highlight the need for a very strong partnership approach involving State, local and federal governments, business and industry in full consultation with the community.
