This may seem like a supplementary question but it is not; it is another question that leads on from the answer just given by the minister. The Water Corporation in its briefing to members of Parliament last year advised that the initial proposed extraction of underground water for 2001-02 was 149 gigalitres. (1) Will the minister advise how many additional gigalitres, above the planned 149 gigalitres, have been applied for this financial year and how many have been approved? (2) Will the minister advise the reason that the Water Corporation has applied for an additional 25.5 gigalitres for use in the metropolitan area up until 30 June 2003? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

(1)-(2) Because the member referred to specific amounts, I shall be very careful and give a considered response so that no error is made. I will seek advice on those questions. At this stage I can answer the question in general terms without dealing with specific amounts. I would not sign off on specific amounts when a question without notice is asked in that manner. The Water Corporation has carried out these actions to ensure that a total sprinkler ban is avoided, so that employment levels are not hit and so people in metropolitan and many non-metropolitan areas of the State have appropriate water supplies.
