❓ Hon Martin Aldridge questions the Minister for Emergency Services regarding funding discrepancies between local government-engaged and DFES-engaged bush fire service volunteers, specifically concerning eligibility for clothing and equipment under the Local Government Grant Scheme (LGGS). The Minister's response clarifies that LGGS funds operational equipment and that local governments should consider individual needs.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT GRANT
SCHEME AND BUSH FIRE SERVICE BRIGADES
1075. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to the
local government grant scheme and bush fire service brigades.
(1) Why are polo t-shirts and dress uniforms
ineligible for funding under the LGGS for community engagement and
training activities when they are eligible for purchase by Department of Fire
and Emergency Services volunteers?
(2) Why are socks
as part of personal protective clothing ineligible under the LGGS when they are
eligible for DFES volunteers?
(3) Why are bush fire service volunteers eligible for
only one set of PPC when they can be deployed for weeks at a time?
(4) Is the
minister aware of the inequities that exist between local government-engaged
volunteers and those engaged by DFES; and, if so, what is the state government
doing to address this?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services
advises the following.
(1)–(4) The
LGGS funds BFB operational equipment only, which includes PPC as part of the
DFES volunteer service protective clothing and equipment matrix. The LGGS
manual for capital and operating grants provides
further advice for BFBs. Local governments are required to consider the
individual needs of their BFBs when
planning for PPC and PPE replacement. Additional PPC is funded by the LGGS
where necessary .
