RESIDENTIAL AGED-CARE FACILITIES —
KALAMUNDA
555. Hon SAMANTHA ROWE to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health:
Residents in Kalamunda and
surrounding suburbs have expressed concerns around the shortfall in residential
aged-care facilities in the area.
(1) Can the
minister advise whether the government shares the concerns of these residents
in relation to a residential aged-care shortage in the area?
(2) If yes to (1), what plans are in
place to address the shortfall in the immediate future?
(3) Has the state
government lobbied the federal government to increase the availability of
residential aged care; and, if not, why not?

Minister for Health, I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(l) Yes.
(2) The
allocation of residential aged-care places is the sole responsibility of the
commonwealth government.
(3) Yes.
Western Australia has the lowest rate of operational residential places of all
the states. Western Australia currently has an approximate shortfall of 3 000
beds when compared with national benchmarks. The lack of residential aged-care
places in WA and the impact on the health system has been raised in
correspondence with the commonwealth government on a number of occasions.
