TAXI
CAMERA SURVEILLANCE UNITS — FAULTS
863. Hon KEN TRAVERS to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I refer to the requirement for taxi operators to have a
Department of Transport–approved taxi camera surveillance unit
installed.
(1) Is the
minister aware that a department-approved TCSU is subject to condensation
build-up in the rooftop camera and may therefore be ineffective in identifying
offenders when required?
(2) If yes, what action is the
minister taking to remedy this situation?
(3) Will the Department of Transport
replace all the faulty cameras; and, if yes, when will this occur?
(4) Have taxidrivers been informed
of the faulty cameras?
(5) If no to (4), why not?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of this question. The Department of Transport
has provided this advice —
(1) Yes.
(2) The Department of Transport has been in
contact with the manufacturer and has been informed that it is a fault
affecting a small number of units. The department is continuing to liaise with
the manufacturer on this issue.
(3) The manufacturer has advised that the
faulty external units are covered under warranty, irrespective of whether the
unit is still within the warranty period.
(4) Drivers are being asked to regularly
check external cameras and contact their camera installer if condensation is
observed. Both major taxi dispatch services are taking action to inform their
respective fleets.
(5) Not applicable.
