INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Before I ask my question, I acknowledge the President of the Shire of Serpentine–Jarrahdale, Councillor Sheila Twine, and Councillor Christine Randall, who are in the gallery. Welcome to the Parliament. I am proud to be part of a government that has dedicated itself to ensuring that education remains a top priority. The independent public school program and its record capital works for schools, which has seen 12 new schools built and 14 schools replaced, are examples of how seriously we on this side of the house take education. Can the minister please advise the house about the new schools that have been opened in 2011? Dr E. CONSTABLE

I think it is fair to say that since coming to office in 2008, this government has overseen the most extensive building program ever in schools in Western Australia. Several members interjected. Dr E. CONSTABLE : I do not care where the money came from; it is still the most extensive building program, and we have overseen it and done it so well! Mr E.S. Ripper : So now you’re claiming credit for the Building the Education Revolution program? Dr E. CONSTABLE : I am claiming credit for us doing it as smoothly as we can. Just go and see what has happened in New South Wales and Victoria. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Thank you, members. Dr E. CONSTABLE : A number of new schools have opened this year: Aubin Grove Primary School; Makybe Rise Primary School; and Spring Hill Primary School, which has begun as an annexe to Tapping Primary School this year. There have been a number of replacement schools: Deanmore Primary School, Karratha Primary School, Wattle Grove Primary School and Wilson Park Primary School. Mrs M.H. Roberts interjected. Dr E. CONSTABLE : I said replacements. Stage 2 of two senior colleges—namely, Comet Bay College and Ellenbrook Secondary College—have been completed, and I am very proud to say that a new Meekatharra School of the Air has opened in Geraldton. Those buildings sat on the edge of an oval of another school—namely, Beachlands Primary School in Geraldton—for many, many years, waiting to be rebuilt, and I am really pleased it has been rebuilt on the site of the Geraldton Camp School. The school will be wonderful for families living in remote parts of this state. The statewide planning of schools is a major, ongoing task. As a result of the huge increase in population in various parts of the state—especially in the outer parts of the metropolitan area—we need to build and open new schools all the time. Today, I announce that four new schools will be planned, built and ready to be opened by 2013: Pearsall Primary School in the Wanneroo area; West Byford Primary School, in the member for Darling Range’s electorate; Baynton West Primary School in Karratha, which will take pressure off Tambrey Primary School; and the member for Collie–Preston will be very pleased to know that the East Dalyellup Primary School is going to be built and will be ready to open in 2013 to relieve the enormous pressure in the member’s electorate. A decision has also been made, because of the pressure on schools in the Wanneroo area, to extend the Spring Hill Primary School from simply being an annexe of Tapping Primary School, to a full K–7 primary school, and it will be extended over this time. These new primary schools will include 13 general learning areas; three early childhood classrooms; library resource centres; administration; art, craft and science rooms; a covered assembly area; a canteen; a music room; ovals; hard courts; cricket nets; and car parks. Mr Speaker, if you were to visit any of our new schools built in recent times, you would see what wonderful buildings we are building now, compared with those built in the 1960s and 1970s, many of which we are having to look at replacing or doing major work on; the new schools are state of the art. It is probably also worth mentioning that this year we have 17 schools under construction or due to commence, right across the state, including Aveley Primary School; Lake Gwelup Primary School; Malvern Springs Primary School; Meadow Springs Primary School; Piara Waters Primary School; Yakamia Primary School; Applecross Senior High School; Ashdale Secondary College; Atwell College, stage 2 — Mr M.P. Whitely interjected. The SPEAKER : Member! Dr E. CONSTABLE : — Baldivis Secondary School; Bullsbrook District High School — Mr M.P. Whitely interjected. The SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean! Dr E. CONSTABLE : — Butler Secondary School; Dongara District High School. Mr M.P. Whitely interjected. The SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean, I am glad you are passionate about education. Most people in this place should be as well. I formally call you for the first time. Dr E. CONSTABLE : I just mention Dongara District High School, which of course is in your electorate, Mr Speaker; Exmouth District High School; Governor Stirling Senior High School; the WA College of Agriculture Harvey; and Karratha Senior High School stage 2. As well as all of that, there have been 1 008 Building the Education Revolution projects across 673 schools. It has been an amazing time for us. I must thank the staff in the Department of Education, led by James Thom, for the wonderful work they have done in bringing these projects on and for the great success we have had in completing almost all of those on time and under budget.
