I refer to concerns about the length of lease being offered to developers at the shortstay accommodation facility planned for Mt Herschel, as it has been suggested that they may be offered an extremely long-term lease on the property.
Will the Premier advise -
(1) What is the length of the lease planned for the $50 million Broadwater Resort at Mt Herschel?
(2) If this lease is over 20 years, can the Premier explain how this is permissible, given that the
Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987
limits leases to 20 years duration?
(3) What immediate steps will the Premier take to ensure that this and any future developments on Rottnest Island will not be granted lease terms longer than the 20 year maximum laid down in the
Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987
?
(4) Will the Premier move as soon as possible to amend the
Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987
to remove any power of the Minister to grant leases longer than 20 years?

(2) The (Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987) under subsection (3)(a) states the Authority has the power to grant a lease or licence for a term not exceeding 20 years, unless the Minister's written approval has been given to the proposed lease. (3) The 20 year maximum extends to the Rottnest Island Authority only. (4) No. The Minister notes a press release dated 30 March 2007 by the Member for Carine stating it is unrealistic to attract tourism investment on leasehold land if we only offer 20 year leases for businesses to recover massive investment. The Member specifically mentions the Rottnest Island Broadwater project stating we must be willing to give longer leases. Therefore the question is somewhat bizarre.
