(c) the effects of the proposal by Alcoa Australia to buy properties adjacent to Alcoa Wagerup in the towns of Yarloop, Waroona and Harvey?
There are several investigations currently underway looking at these issues. The Member for Cockburn and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, has chaired two meetings between representatives of the government, the Unions and Alcoa. Issues brought to these meetings included odour reduction strategies, employee and community health concerns and a proposal to increase the buffer zone around the refinery. There is also detailed consultation occurring between medical practitioners associated with the local community, Alcoa and Government Departments, including Health Department, Mineral and Petroleum Resources and Environmental Protection. The Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs, chaired by the Hon Christine Sharp MLC is also investigating this matter. The Government believes it is important to allow the above inquiries to be completed. Any decision on the need for further investigation will be taken after consideration of these findings.
