I draw the minister’s attention to the promise of the Labor Party during the election campaign to examine whether legal options exist to exit the previous Government’s gas-fired power contract for the West Kimberley. Has legal advice been obtained; and, if so, what is that advice? Hon TOM STEPHENS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. As promised in its pre-election commitments, the Government has sought legal advice on the standing of the contracts with Energy Equity and Woodside for the supply of electricity to Western Power in the West Kimberley. The Leader of the Opposition will appreciate that I am answering this question on behalf of the Minister for Energy. The advice has been received but it is not appropriate to comment on the nature of the advice prior to the matter being considered by Cabinet. The matter will be considered by Cabinet in the near future. A statement will be made once Cabinet has considered the matter. The Government wishes to make it clear that it is not contemplating dishonouring contracts.
